I am very happy and grateful that I discovered this flawless synthwave masterpiece today. I've been listening to it on an endless loop for 5 hours now. The last time this happened was when I heard ‘Running in the night’ by FM-84 and Ollie Wride for the first time. I'm looking forward to getting to know your other songs when I finally can get away from this at some point.

Kyotokyo 1999 (cyberpunk, anime, 116min, 1989, Nighstoppu Animations, japan-only) (Kyotokyo 1999) Kyotokyo, year 1999 AD. The metropolis is inhabited by milions of people and milions of cyborgs, who struggle through poverty and unequal laws, many forced into indentured servitude. NiNGENESIS Corporation is the biggest assembler of cyborgs, and many rumors course about its secret-not-secret CommsCenter, which is said to direct surveillance efforts against nascent cyborg population. Some cyborgs are united under the charismatic and benevolent guidance of Lady Mother, who provides for them, using her wealth and connection to rescue young cyborgs from poverty. Two of such recently rescued cyborgs are Mako, who suffered cranial damage, and Rina, whose eyes have uncanny milky-white coloration. But Lady Mother's true goal is to bring down NiNGENESIS corporation and its infamous CommsCenter, freeing connected cyborgs. But with the megacorp relying on assassins, mercenaries and elite security forces to maintain a tight grip on the cyborgs and citizens of Kyotokyo, can Mako and Rina do anything significant to help topple it? (Guerilla Gardens) Lady Mother meets with the heads of several other pro-independence groups and discusses how to bring down the CommsCenter - one of young cyborgs overhears this and runs away. Mako and Rina in the meanwhile undergo more treatments to help restore their bodies, and then join other liberated cyborgs in training and maintenance. They learn how to navigate the Net, how to fire guns, how to keep their synthetic elements in good shape. A small surveillance drone is shot down by Rina after a lenghty pursuit over the rooftops of Guerilla Gardens, and they inform Lady Mother about this. She plays it down but deep down she knows that NiNGENESIS SecForce is homing in on the location of Guerilla Gardens. She makes a call to Za Waira (the Wire), a human ally and news anchor lady for KyotokyoTV to pull some strings. (Malfunction Overdrive) Next evening, Mako undergoes a malfunction, and together with Rina they hole up in the old apartment that serves as their home. A last-minute deep-insert surgery on Mako's processing unit saves his life and the two embrace. They feel 'intimate' first time in their synthetic life, and they decide to act on their newfound, human-like instincts, leading to some physical loving. But as they are inexperienced and Mako turns to be 'too big' for Rina, in the end they pass up on this idea, saving it for some other time and place. They cuddle up and fall asleep. (RAID) Next day, the atmosphere at Guerilla Gardens is tense - some cyborg guards go missing or report being attacked, and surveillance drone sightings spike up. Lady Mother suits for combat as underground trains and jetbikes converge on the location of the hidden district. Mako and Rina wake up for the daily training regimen, only to be informed that NiNGENESIS SecForce is about to strike. All hell breaks loose as explosives are detonated at few certain spots of Guerilla Gardens, and NiNGENESIS SecForce assaults the place. Led by a brutish mutant Jurgen and a cyborg-hating Cinderella, the SecForce mows down many cyborgs in a brutal way, forcing Lady Mother to come out and fight as well. The old cyborg teacher makes short work of SecForce goons, but when she meets Jurgen and Cinderella face-to-face, the two lieutenants slowly overpower her. Mako and Rina watch from afar as Lady Mother is crippled by Jurgen's shotgun and Cinderella finishes her off with a laser blast to the face. Jurgen rounds up SecForce and prepares to leave before Kyotokyo Metropolice arrives, while Cinderella, who caught sight of Mako and Rina, pursues the two young cyborgs. (DEAthZONE) Cinderella pursues Mako and Rina, killing the few cyborgs that try to help the young duo escape. On the rooftops above Guerilla Gardens, an enigmatic woman in crimson coat and with sniper rifle in her hands utilizes the Net to spy on Cinderella, Mako and Rina as they make their way through Kyotokyo slums and old metro tunnels. Mako and Rina reach the hideout of small cyborg clique, and along with them prepare for Cinderella's approach. The wicked assassin has no trouble dispatching the cyborgs one by one, shooting them in the face. Suddenly, a shot through the leg pins Cinderella to the floor. With clicking of hi-heels, the rooftop sniper approaches, and eliminates Cinderella with a blast to the heart. Mako and Rina ask their savior for name - and the woman introduces herself as Akamanto, and promises to help them to 'repay' a favor she had with Lady Mother. (NiNGENESIS Corp.) Mako, Rina and Akamanto meet with another pro-independence group of cyborgs, who are willing to go with Lady Mother's plan. Mako and Rina, carrying a hi-power explosive, are infiltrated into NiNGENESIS' CommsCenter while Akamanto provides a distraction on the other side of the sprawling communications and factory complex. Mako and Rina reach level D4, barely avoiding accidental detection and tripping of security systems by utilizing air vents and decrepit maintenance corridors. In the heart of Level D4, they find... (Hivemind) A mountain of cyborg bodies and heads, all connected by an unholy web of wires and cables. This is the Hivemind, the control and surveillance system of NiNGENESIS Corporation, butchered into submission by NinGen's SecForce. Mako and Rina find Voice, a partial cyborg able to speak and operate computers across Kyotokyo. Rusting and unable to self-terminate, Hivemind explains their purpose to Mako and Rina, and that NinGen Cyborgs will never be free if the Hivemind is still operational. Hivemind pleads to be destroyed so that the mass of cyborgs connected together can be finally freed as well, and helps the two protagonists by disabling CommsCenter security systems and opening emergency escape routes. The bomb's timer is activated and Mako and Rina say goodbyes to Hivemind, before escaping. Hivemind ponders their future as the bomb's buzzer counts down to zero - Level D4 and adjacent areas are totally destroyed in the explosion. (Burning Empire) Za Waira, from her TV station's jet-copter, reports live a mysterious explosion and fires that ravage CommsCenter while also mentioning that NiNGENESIS software system shut down and its cyborgs began to leave their designated living areas en masse. The copter's crew alerts Za Waira to pair of jet-bikes that escapes CommsCenter grounds, pursued by a large group of military cars. Its Mako and Rina, and Akamanto, riding away. NinGen SecForce, led by Jurgen, chases after them, the two groups exchanging fire as they descend from above roads into underground tunnels. Akamanto is shot in the shoulder, revealing that she is also a cyborg, not a human, and her return fire explodes Jurgen's armored car, killing him. With the burning APC causing a stuckage in the tunnel they were traversing, Akamanto bids the protagonists farewell - promising to meet them again one day - and drives in another direction while Mako and Rina escape to safety as well. One week later... (Synthetic Heart) Credits roll as Za Waira reports that NiNGENESIS Corporation's CEOs have been arrested after the true purpose of ruined CommsCenter comes to light. Kyotokyo City Council quickly pushes a broad law package that see many of NinGen cyborgs liberated and given help. Back at their apartment, Mako and Rina watch the report on the old TV set. Cuddling and intimate again, Rina and Mako decide to give 'human love' another try, covering themselves with a blanket to do the deed... just as Za Waira switches to reporting about mysterious Cybervirus outbreak that afflicts cyborgs connected to the Net, causing them to go on murderous rampages. (this serves as sequel hook to Kyotokyo 2000: The Millenium Virus) THE END. ...of course, as it is with old anime studios, Nightstoppu Animations gets absorbed by a much bigger one. Because of Kyotokyo 1999's financial disappointment, its scripts are shelved as 'too cliche' and neither Kyotokyo 2000: The Millenium Virus, nor the final part of the trilogy, Kyotokyo 2001: Space Elevator Odyssey, get produced, and the whole of Kyotokyo universe is known only to hardcore vintage anime fans. Dunno why I wrote this down, but it has been on my mind since I first heard this album and I had to let it out. Sorry for wall of text!
